Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive-lens-exchangeRefractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is an elective intraocular procedure that is essentially performed the same way as cataract surgery. During an RLE procedure, the eyes clear natural lens (crystalline lens) is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

This procedure is recommended for patients who are not eligible for laser vision correction (LASIK/PRK or SMILE and/or those who are already presbyopic). Presbyopia is when your eyes gradually lose their ability to focus on things up close; it is a natural part of aging.

Once an RLE procedure is completed, patients will never need to undergo cataract surgery as the natural crystalline lens has already been removed.

There are various IOL implant options available for this procedure that can correct vision for far, intermediate, near or all of the above. IOL options are based on your visual needs and lifestyle and will be discussed with you during your consultation with one of our experienced doctors.
